In The Life You've Always Wanted, John Ortberg focuses on spiritual formation for "normal" people. Ortberg teaches that there is a difference between "trying" to become a better Christian and "training" to become a better person. In doing so, he addresses a key difference between true holiness and legalism. When we try, in our own strength, to be better Christians, we are destined to failure. But when follow positive principles of training—the type of principles that apply to becoming better musicians, or athletes, or scholars—we gradually find ourselves becoming better Christians.
