I have learned much from reading Bill Hybel's book, Courageous Leadership. While this book is aimed at pastors and churches, I found much that can be applied to any organization, either nonprofit or for profit. For example, his recommendations on the qualifications to look for when adding someone to a leadership team resonated soundly within me. Hybel recommends examining the three Cs: Character, Competence, and Chemistry—in that order. He also stresses the importance of matching giftedness with the situation—of making sure that people get placed in the right box. In my mind, this book is a must read for pastors and other church leaders, along with most Christian businessmen and women. It is now a required text in my Introduction to Leadership class.
