In Deliver Me, Richard Exley deals with the methods that Jesus used—and that we can use as well—to overcome temptation. I re-read this book after assigning it as reading to a student that I was counseling with. The most significant insight that I gained while re-reading the book is what Jesus meant when, during his temptation, he told the devil, "Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God" (Matthew 4:4). I've always believed that Jesus was referring to the written word of God—which He was—but now I realize that Jesus was also referring to the voice of God that spoke from heaven at his baptism, saying, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased" (Matthew 3:17). As a personal application, this means that I must hold on to the words which God has spoken into my life, both through his written word and through his personal revelation of himself to me (once those personal words have been tested against God's written word).
