Reading Jim Cymbala's book, Fresh Power: Experiencing the Vast Resources of the Spirit of God, was a good experience for me. His balance is part of what impressed me. He believes in the power of the Holy Spirit, but advocates steering clear of extremes. In chapter 2, Cymbala uses the terms "cemeteries" and "insane asylums" to describe the extremes that churches tend to fall into concerning the power of the Holy Spirit. We need to believe in and pray for the moving of God's spirit, but also need to avoid some of the craziness that some churches and individuals fall into.
