Student comments on teaching are often more helpful than evaluation scores in improving the quality of teaching.
Here are some of the more helpful comments that I have received while teaching at Mount Vernon Nazarene University:
The instructor was open and encouraged me to want to research more
He encouraged class involvement, which made for interesting discussions
He created an environment where everybody’s comments were welcome. He encouraged creativity and rewarded efforts made.
He did a variety of activities that made us participate, and really made a difference seeing how the activities related to the subjects.
He knew the material, and he made us feel comfortable (this being our first course in the MBA program). He did fun activities in class, and he helped us recognize our strengths.
Robert Roller is a good speaker who uses clear examples to convey his point. He seemed accessible and knowledgeable about the course topic. He seemed to be a fair grader who was very upfront with students about his expectations.
Never having taken an online course before, I was very nervous about what to expect. Professor Roller was very good about explaining assignments. Professor Roller was also very good about explaining what errors we made and how we could improve.
I liked how Dr. Roller allowed us to teach sections by mini presentations. He gave great examples of real life scenarios. He really helped set the foundation of the tools we need for leadership
Dr. Roller brought to the class a wealth of knowledge that spanned across all generations and walks of life.
Encouraging to students who did not have the best presentation skills and worked to move each individual at least one step along on the scale. Great facilitator of discussions. Nice constructive comments on the graded portions of assignments
Dr Roller was extremely knowledgeable on the subject of strategy. His life experience and practice knowledge had me taking notes where I would normally sit through a lecture.
Was very passionate about the subject matter, knowledgeable, and wanted us to stretch our way of thinking. Good sense of humor.
Here are some of the more helpful comments that I received while teaching at LeTourneau University:
He made it clear concerning every view of a Christian and a non-Christian.
Encouraged everyone to participate in activities and devotionals.
My professor brought up real-life situations, challenged our thoughts. Interacted with students' beliefs and challenged us to look at things in different ways.
He did well at facilitating discussions.
Dr. Roller - you run a good management class. You are well organized, on time, and clear in your speech.
The devotionals were great! They were well prepared.
I really appreciate how accessible Dr. Roller is to his students. It is also evident that he has their best interest in mind and desires and challenges them to live up to their potential. I enjoy the class involvement and the applications to real life.
Dr. Roller's devotions are really tied into the business view of things.
The tests are a little hard to take.
Best business class! (Strategic Management) Most informative, challenging, and one to learn from.
I have learned a great deal in this course (Strategic Management). All the previous business classes that I have taken were brought together in this course. This course is vital to every business major.
Great class! I enjoyed being challenged to think and apply my faith to strategic management. Dr. Roller did a great job returning our case studies and tests promptly. I also enjoyed the hands-on simulation game. It helped me put all the classroom theory into action.
This course requires three times as much time as all my other business courses combined. This was a struggle, but I feel I learned a great deal, and appreciate that Dr. Roller remains very strong in course load.
Great teacher! Enjoyed the class (Principles of Management). He is very good at applying real-world situations. Overall A+.
Tests should be returned sooner.
Dr. Roller's examples are great and help to illustrate the material.
A lot of work! (Strategic Management)
He wants us to think on our own and be innovative.
Great orator! Makes you think deeply about things...
Very hard class (Operations Management) as far as terminology, and teacher did a good job relating and helping to understand what is going on.
Dr. Roller is a dynamic teacher who has a lot of experience and is good at expressing it.
Enjoyed hands-on case studies and presentations; they clarified the material in the book.
He gave lots of opportunities to look at the material in different ways: videos, exercises, cases, homework, and the presentations all helped aid in the understanding of the course material.
Lots of discussion. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the class.
Dr. Roller is always very ready to explain a concept, and didn't mind spending as much time as necessary to make sure we understood what was going on.
Integrated faith into all aspects of the course.
Treated us with a professional attitude and expected us to act like adults in our responsibilities, and treated us in that manner.
Excellent use of Scripture and business principles.
He needs to teach some of the other professors on how to teach adults.
I will probably retain more knowledge and concepts from this class than others.
The devotionals were always challenging and shed a different light on old passages of Scripture or subjects.
When ethical or moral issues were stumbled on within the course material, they weren't skirted, but instead explored.
