Administrative Accomplishments

Mount Vernon Nazarene University

When I became the dean of the Jetter School of Business at MVNU, the business faculty had been through a challenging time period in which several business faculty members had been let go in a reduction in force, the business dean had left suddenly, and the institution was going through many changes. There was a substantial tension between the business school and the administration, and many initiatives had ground to a halt.

I quickly began to establish good relationships with the business faculty members and the administration, working to bring healing to damaged relationships. At the same time, I worked with the business faculty to establish a vision for the school. This allowed us to begin working on several important initiatives:

  • Developing a new structure for graduate business education, including a MBA in Healthcare Administration degree program, MBA concentrations in three different areas, and a revised Master of Science in Management degree program.
  • Developing a new structure for the Bachelor of Business administration adult degree program, including a more tightly-structured, condensed core, and optional concentrations.
  • Completely revising the traditional undergraduate business curriculum to offer students current, in-demand options while making the degree programs more efficient and reducing the number of low-enrollment classes.
  • Developing completely online BBA and MBA programs

As the faculty have worked together, we have accomplish some incredible things:

  • Hosting the 2011 Christian Business Faculty Association conference on our campus, which was a tremendous success!
  • Having 16 of our business faculty earn the right to present papers, presentations, or workshops at the 2012 CBFA conference.
  • Having three faculty members successfully complete their dissertations in the past year (2011-12).

International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education

During my tenure as President of the IACBE (2006-09), I had many opportunities to make a positive impact on the organization. My predecessor, Dr. John L. Green, was the founder of the organization. John was a tremendous founder. He was an entrepreneur and idea person, and founded the IACBE with the goal of recognizing, developing, and enhancing excellence in business education. I had the opportunity to follow in his footsteps while helping the organization to mature past the founding stage.

  • Led the IACBE’s process for attaining recognition by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
  • Developed a new marketing strategy for the organization, including development of new marketing materials and a new web site.
  • Developed materials for staff evaluation and development.
  • Hired a Director of Eurasian Operations
  • Developed a monthly newsletter for communicating with the Board of Directors
  • Developed materials for communicating the mission of the IACBE to the business community.
  • Developed new formats for the IACBE annual conference.

LeTourneau University

At LeTourneau University, I was given the opportunity to provide leadership in a number of ways. Some of the items that I consider significant include the following:

  • Spearheaded development (along with Dr. John Feezell, Professor of Economics, and Dr. Glenn Sumrall, Provost/VPAA) of the Personal Educational Portfolio, an electronic planning, documentation, and marketing tool for students. The process of developing, documenting, and refining the portfolio helps to ensure that intentional integration of faith, learning, and living occurs in our students. (The portfolio you are reading is an example of how the PEP can be applied to faculty development.) The portfolio also provides an outcomes assessment measure of the integration of faith and learning.
  • Obtained professional accreditation for the business programs through the IACBE
  • Led the process of redesigning the traditional undergraduate curriculum to create ten different majors. The LeTourneau University School of Business now has programs available in accounting, business administration, business/design technology, finance, human resource management, industrial management, international business, management, management information systems, and marketing.
  • Worked to create effective marketing of the business programs, including web site redesign and brochure redesign.
  • As a result of these efforts, we have seen traditional undergraduate enrollment in business rise by approximately 50 percent since 1999.
  • Spearheaded the formation of a Business Advisory Council (with approximately 25 business leaders as members) in East Texas, along with the formation of a program advisory council in Dallas.
  • Assisted in the creation of a speaker series to bring business leaders to campus.
  • Provided leadership in the recruitment and hiring of faculty, including management and finance faculty in Longview; accounting, finance, and management faculty in Houston; and economics and management faculty in Dallas. Also provided leadership in the recruitment and hiring of site directors for our sites in Houston, Dallas, and Austin.
  • Provided leadership in program and curriculum revision of our MBA program.  This led to the creation of six graduate concentrations, in management, human resources, finance, international business, marketing, and e-commerce.
  • Provided leadership and assistance in developing a curriculum writers' guide for our graduate and adult curriculum.
  • Provided leadership in the redesign of our Student Evaluation of Teaching Effectiveness questionnaire.
  • Created a School of Business Graduation Banquet for our graduating seniors. This awards banquet has been helpful in ensuring a commitment to the university following graduation.
  • Created a new process to help business students prepare for the ETS major field exam in business.  This has contributed to institutional average scores in the 93rd and 89th percentile for 2002 and 2003, respectively.

Roberts Wesleyan College

At Roberts Wesleyan College, I was provided with tremendous opportunities to provide administrative leadership, especially considering that it was my first official administrative post. Some of the things that I was able to accomplish at RWC include:

  • Providing initial leadership as the first Division Chair for Business & Management. This meant pulling together two departments that had formerly existed in other divisions and integrating them into the division, along with the newly-created masters program.
  • Providing leadership in the creation of a Master of Science in Management (MSM) program in less than six months. This included all facets of new program development except the authoring and approval of the program, which occurred prior to my arrival at RWC. I was responsible for curriculum development, faculty recruiting and training, development of marketing processes and materials, development of admissions processes, and all other areas of program development. The MSM reached payback in its first year, and has become a stable and successful program.
  • Recruited several faculty members; most importantly Dr. Steven Bovee, who now serves exceptionally in my former position.
  • Providing leadership in receiving professional accreditation for the Business Department through the Association of Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). RWC has since changed from the ACBSP to the IACBE for its business accreditation.
  • Next:  Teaching Skills
